What I talked about in yoga this weekend…

So if you don’t know, I started a book club this winter.

We’re kicking off our season with the book, “The Artist Way” by Julia Cameron .

For those of you unfamiliar with the text, it is a 12 week program to help enhance your spirituality while deepening your creativity and your creative lifestyle. What it looks like as a reader, each chapter is dedicated as a week. In each week you have a few pages of reading on that week’s topic followed by some journaling prompts and activities. Alongside your weekly reading you are asked to follow through with your morning pages and artist dates. It may sound like a handful, but I’m finding that it’s just creating a little discipline in my routine to make space for this new habit.

Anyways, how does our book club book tie into my dharma talk in class…

This week Cameron started discussing growth in your creative journey, the common misconceptions and what growth actually looks like. She says…”Growth is an erratic forward movement: two steps forward, one step back.” Isn’t that the truth.

It’s so easy to think, “okay this is my goal, I’m going to do it. And it will be done”. When in reality the goal can further shift down the field; the time line changes, there’s interruptions and setbacks. Then there are times the goal completely changes and becomes unrecognizable from when you first set out on your path.

As we all know — tirelessly well — it is about the journey through rather than the destination or deadline.

If we could only see each bump and set back as a new way of expanding rather than limiting. Two steps forward, one step back. The never ending dance of life.
